The NUCLEUS
VALENCE CORE of LIFE has the capacity of combining or producing specific
force (chi), power, speed and stability (spirit) within the UM and YANG.
The 5 Valences which can also be
referred to as “Zones” or “Ranges” are areas of offense and defense as
applied to Self Defense or Sparring. These 5 valences determine the type(s) of
techniques which can be applied within each particular “zone”. As movement
within these valences is dynamic, so too are the techniques which become
available within each valence.
Valence 0
Is the area where both the attacker’s and defender’s bodies are in
contact with each other. Grappling, holds and throws are the main
techniques applied within valence 0.
Valence 1
The area between grappling and punching. The area where techniques such as
elbows, knees, head butts, etc. can be used. Trapping is also an applicable
technique within this valence.
Valence 2
The hand strike valence. Too far to use elbows or knee with out entering
further. Short snappy kicks are also effective within this valence.
Valence 3
The kicking valence. Effective techniques for this valence include thrust
and spinning kicks as well as short range
stepping techniques.
Valence 4
Long range valence. Full stepping techniques and skip or jump kicking
techniques.
